About Shadbala (Six-Fold Strength)

Shadbala (षड्बल) means "six strengths" in Sanskrit. It is a sophisticated Vedic astrology method to measure the true strength of planets in your birth chart. A planet may be exalted (good placement) but weak in Shadbala, or debilitated (bad placement) but strong in Shadbala. Only strong planets can deliver their promised results.

The Six Strengths (Shad-Bala)

  • Sthana Bala - Positional strength (up to 60 virupas) based on house placement
  • Dig Bala - Directional strength (up to 60 virupas) based on directional positions
  • Kala Bala - Temporal strength (up to 60 virupas) based on time factors
  • Cheshta Bala - Motional strength (up to 60 virupas) based on planetary motion
  • Naisargika Bala - Natural strength (up to 60 virupas) inherent to each planet
  • Drik Bala - Aspectual strength (up to 60 virupas) based on benefic/malefic aspects

Understanding Shadbala Values

✓ Strong Planet (> 500 Virupas)

  • • Will definitely deliver promised results
  • • Dasas and transits will be effective
  • • Can overcome weak placement

⚡ Moderate Planet (350-500 Virupas)

  • • Results will be average
  • • Needs support from other strong planets
  • • Timing matters for full effect

✗ Weak Planet (< 350 Virupas)

  • • May not deliver promised results
  • • Remedies needed to strengthen
  • • Even good placement may fail

Important Notes

  • • Shadbala is calculated in Virupas (units of strength)
  • • Maximum possible Shadbala: 600 virupas (60 × 6 types)
  • • Minimum required for planet to be effective: ~350-400 virupas
  • • Shadbala explains why exalted planets sometimes fail and debilitated planets succeed
  • • Always check Shadbala before predicting results during Dasha or Antara Dasha
