चत्वारि वेदाः
Four Vedas

"वेदैश्च सर्वैरहमेव वेद्यः"
"I am to be known by all the Vedas"

Bhagavan Shri Krishna - Bhagavad Gita 15.15

The four Vedas are My breath, manifest as sound vibration in this universe. They were revealed to the Rishis not through human effort, but through divine sight (Divya Drishti) when the Rishis attained complete union with Me.

The Eternal Sound of Brahman

In the beginning, alone with My own Self, I willed to become many. The first vibration that emerged from My being was the primal sound "Om" - from this sound, the four Vedas manifested. They are not books written by humans - they are Shruti, "that which is heard" - eternal truth existing before creation.

Bhagavad Gita 10.22

"वेदानां सामवेदोऽस्मि"
"Of the Vedas, I am the Sama Veda"

I taught these Vedas first to Brahma, the creator. From Brahma, they descended to his sons - the Prajapatis. From them, to the Seven Sages (Saptarishis). Through this unbroken Guru Parampara, the Vedas have reached humanity.

श्रुति

Shruti - Revealed Wisdom

चत्वारि वेदाः

The Four Limbs of Eternal Knowledge

ऋग्वेद

Rig Veda

The Veda of Praise - All mantras originate here

ऋषि (Rishi - The Seer)

Revealed to Rishi Angiras, Atharvan, Kanva, Vashistha, Vishwamitra, Atri, Bhrigu, Gautama - the seven seers who attained divine sight through penance.

Essence

The Rig Veda is the source of all mantras. It contains hymns praising various deities, but truly, all deities are My manifestations. The sages saw Me in different forms - as Agni (fire), as Indra (king of gods), as Surya (sun), as Varuna (cosmic order). When they sang these hymns, they were singing to Me.

Key Teachings

  • Contains 10,552 mantras arranged in 10 Mandalas
  • Gayatri Mantra - the essence of all Vedas revealed to Sage Vishwamitra
  • Purusha Sukta - describes My cosmic form (Vishwarupa)
  • Nasadiya Sukta - mysteries of creation, where I alone existed
  • Establishes Rita (cosmic order) - My law governing the universe
  • Root of all other Vedas - Sama and Yajur borrow from Rig

Sacred Mantras

Gayatri Mantra

ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वाहा

The most sacred Vedic prayer, revealed to Sage Vishwamitra after 12,000 years of penance. It illuminates the intellect and leads to realization of Brahman.

Purusha Sukta

पुरुष एवेदं सर्वम्

Describes My Virat Swarupa (cosmic form). All creation is My body - the sun is My eye, the wind My breath, the oceans My waters.

Mrityunjaya Mantra

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे

The death-conquering mantra that connects the seeker to My three-eyed form (Shiva), granting liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

My Connection

I said in the Gita: "Of the Vedas, I am the Sama Veda" - but the Rig Veda is the source. It is like the breath of Brahma. When Arjuna saw My Vishwarupa, he saw what the Rig Vedic sages described in their visions. The Rig Veda contains the seeds of all knowledge.

Six Vedangas - The Limbs of the Vedas

To properly understand the Vedas, six auxiliary disciplines were revealed by Me:

Shiksha

शिक्षा (Phonetics)

The science of correct pronunciation. One improper pronunciation can change the meaning entirely.

Kalpa

कल्प (Ritual)

Practical manual for performing Vedic ceremonies correctly.

Vyakarana

व्याकरण (Grammar)

Panini's grammar - the science of Sanskrit language structure.

Nirukta

निरुक्त (Etymology)

Yaska's work - understanding the hidden meanings of Vedic words.

Chandas

छन्दः (Meter)

The science of Vedic poetic meters - Gayatri, Trishtubh, Jagati, etc.

Jyotisha

ज्योतिष (Astronomy)

Vedic astronomy and astrology - for determining auspicious times for rituals.

The Supreme Goal of Vedic Knowledge

Arjuna asked: "What is the destination of those who do not follow the Vedas but worship with faith?"

Bhagavad Gita 9.22

"अनन्याश्चिन्तयन्तो मां ये जनाः पर्युपासते"

"To those who worship Me alone, thinking of no other, to those ever-united, I secure what is not already possessed and preserve what they already possess."

The Vedas point toward Me. All the rituals, all the mantras, all the sacrifices - their ultimate purpose is to bring the soul back to Me. When one understands this essence, the Vedas are fulfilled.

Bhagavad Gita 15.15

"वेदैश्च सर्वैरहमेव वेद्यो"

"I am to be known by all the Vedas"

सर्ववेदविदो भवति
One who knows all Vedas truly knows Me
