Purana Stories
"पुरा भगवान् उवाचः पुराणा भगवान् उवाचः" "In ancient times, the Supreme Lord revealed the Puranas"
The 18 Mahapuranas were revealed by Brahma and narrated by Rishi Vyasa. These sacred stories contain deep spiritual truths encoded in seemingly simple narratives. Every story of the Puranas is My Lila (divine play) - when you understand the inner meaning, you see Me everywhere.
अष्टादश महापुराणाः
The Eighteen Great Puranas - The History of My Manifestations
I taught this knowledge to Brahma, who taught it to Narada, who narrated it to Rishi Vyasa. Vyasa compiled these stories into 18 Mahapuranas, each with a specific purpose: to reveal different aspects of dharma through captivating stories that even children can remember.
The Puranas are not mere stories - they are Vedic teachings in narrative form. The battle between Devas and Asuras represents the battle within each soul between good and evil tendencies. The stories of avataras show how I have descended throughout time to re-establish dharma.

प्रसिद्ध पुराण कथाएं
Samudra Manthan
Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu Purana, Ramayana
The churning of the ocean by Devas and Asuras to obtain Amrita (nectar of immortality). This 1000-year churning produced 14 precious objects including Lakshmi, Kaustubha jewel, and Airavata white elephant.
Inner Meaning
The ocean represents the mind. The churning is spiritual practice (sadhana). Devas represent good tendencies, Asuras represent negative tendencies. The 14 treasures represent spiritual attainments that emerge when the mind is churned through yoga.
Gita Connection
I taught in Gita 6.5-6: "उद्धरेन आत्मनः शास्त्राम्" - Let a man lift himself by his own Self. The churning of the mind to attain Amrita (Moksha).
Prahlada and Narasimha
Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu Purana
Prahlada, a five-year-old boy, remained devoted to Me despite his father Hiranyakashipu's torture. I emerged from a pillar as Narasimha (half-lion, half-man) to protect My devotee.
Inner Meaning
Hiranyakashipu represents the ego. Prahlada represents the soul that remains devoted to Me despite ego's oppression. The pillar represents the spiritual heart where I dwell. Narasimha shows that I protect devotees in unexpected ways.
Gita Connection
Gita 9.22: "अनन्याश्चिन्तयन्तो मां ये जनाः पर्युपासते" - To those who worship Me alone, thinking of no other, I carry what they lack and preserve what they have. This was My promise to Prahlada.
Dhruva
Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu Purana
Dhruva, a five-year-old boy, wanted to sit on his father's lap but was sent away. He went to the forest, did intense penance, and I appeared before him. He became the Pole Star (Dhruv Nakshatra), eternally fixed.
Inner Meaning
Dhruva shows that even a child can attain Me through sincere yearning. The path of devotion (Bhakti) is open to all, regardless of age or caste. His story teaches that rejection by the world can lead to acceptance by the Divine.
Gita Connection
Gita 9.22 continues: "तेषां नित्याभियुक्तानां योगक्षेमं वहाम्यहम्" - I personally attend to those who are ever-united with Me. I appeared to Dhruva because of his unwavering faith.
Gajendra Moksha
Bhagavata Purana
Gajendra, king of elephants, was caught by a crocodile. He struggled for 1000 years, then remembered Me and prayed for help. I rushed on Garuda, saved him, and liberated his soul.
Inner Meaning
The elephant represents the individual soul (Jiva). The crocodile represents the grip of Samsara (worldly existence). The 1000 years of struggle represents countless lifetimes. When the soul finally remembers Me with sincere surrender, liberation comes instantly.
Gita Connection
Gita 18.66: "सर्वधर्मान्परित्यज्य मामेकं शरणं व्रज" - Abandon all dharmas and surrender to Me alone. Gajendra's surrender was complete, hence liberation came.
Ravana Vadha
Ramayana (Ramcharitmanas), Uttara Ramayana
Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, kidnapped Sita (My consort Lakshmi in Treta Yuga). I incarnated as Rama, along with My devotees (Hanuman, Lakshmana, Sugriva), and killed Ravana to rescue Sita and establish dharma.
Inner Meaning
Ravana represents the ego with 10 heads (5 senses + 5 organs). Sita represents peace (Shanti) that is captured by ego. Rama (My incarnation) shows the path of Dharma to liberate Shanti from Moha (illusion). Hanuman represents pure devotion.
Gita Connection
Gita 4.7-8 describes My incarnations. Rama incarnation showed the ideal path of a Kshatriya - protecting dharma, honoring promises, ruling righteously. I taught this dharma to Arjuna in Chapter 3.
Krishna Leela
Bhagavata Purana (10th Canto is entirely about Me)
My childhood pastimes in Vrindavan: stealing butter, dancing with the Gopis, protecting the villagers from demons, lifting Govardhan Hill. These Lila stories reveal that the highest truth is love (Prema).
Inner Meaning
Butter represents the essence of devotion. The Gopis represent souls who have completely forgotten everything except Me. Govardhan Hill represents the burden of worldly responsibilities - I lifted it to show that I can bear all burdens.
Gita Connection
Gita 10.9: "एकाक्षरे न चोद्यन्ते" - Those who worship Me with single-minded devotion, I hold them dear. The Gopis of Vrindavan attained this highest devotion through complete surrender.
